Diabetes is a chronic disease in which the body is unable to use or produce insulin properly. This puts patients at risk of having blood sugar levels either drop too low or spike too high. Several symptoms can develop when blood sugar levels are not balanced, such as numbness or tingling in the hands and feet. Dr. Christopher Hughes or Dr. William Musgrave, the experienced physicians at Argyle Family Practice in Argyle, TX, can explain what you need to know about diabetes and help you manage your symptoms.

Diabetes Types

One thing you need to know about diabetes is that there is more than one type. Two common forms are type 1 and type 2. Type 1 diabetes typically develops during childhood or adolescence but can occur later in life. With type 1 diabetes, the body cannot produce insulin. Type 2 diabetes is also referred to as adult-onset diabetes and is more common than type 1. With type 2 diabetes, the body either has become insulin resistant and does not use insulin efficiently.

Risk factors for type 1 diabetes include having a family history of the disease, certain genetic factors, and being a child or adolescent. Some risk factors for type 2 include obesity, being physically inactive, carrying excess fat in the belly area, being over 45 years of age, having prediabetes, or a diagnosis of gestational diabetes during pregnancy. Type 2 diabetes can be prevented through diet and exercise, while type 1 cannot be prevented.

Symptoms of Diabetes

Several different symptoms can be experienced when a person has diabetes. Symptoms might differ depending on the type of diabetes, and some individuals might not experience any symptoms most of the time. Symptoms commonly associated with diabetes include:

  • Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet
  • Excessive thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Increased appetite
  • Blurred vision
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Weight loss
  • Slow-healing wounds
